  40.   Description:
  41.     Abstract:
  42.       This data set is the digital geologic province layer for map of
  43.       South Asia.  The data set includes arcs, polgons, polygon labels,
  44.       and attributes for province number and province name.  The data
  45.       set was compiled using the geologic layer or cover from Open-
  46.       File Report 97-470C geo8 as a reference base.  The map is
  47.       being used map to assist in the assessment of oil and gas for
  48.       the World Energy Project.
  49.     Purpose:
  50.       This data set provides one of the strategic tools to assist in the
  51.       U.S. Geological Survey World Energy Project.  This digital geologic
  52.       province map with selected stratigraphic and structural features
  53.       was created specifically for the oil and gas assessment of selected
  54.       provinces of South Asia.
  55.     Supplemental_Information:
  56.       Polygons and line work for the provinces determined by
  57.       Ben E. Law and Craig J. Wandrey.  These province boundaries were
  58.       intended to encompass areas
  59.
  60.       For data management purposes the world was divided into eight energy regions corresponding approximately to the economic regions of the
  61.       world as defined by the U.S. Department of State.  South Asia (Region 8) is represented
  62.       on this CD-ROM (see Reference Map), and includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan,
  63.       India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
  64.
  65.       Each region was then further divided into geologic provinces on the basis of natural
  66.       geologic entities and may include a dominant structural element or a number of
  67.       contiguous elements.  Some provinces contain multiple genetically related basins.
  68.       Geologic province boundaries for South Asia were delineated using data from UNESCO
  69.       geologic maps, and other tectonic and geographic data (see Selected References).
  70.       Offshore province boundaries were defined by the 2000 meter bathymetric contour from
  71.       the UNESCO geologic maps (see References).   Each province was assigned a unique
  72.       number; the first digit is the region number.  An attempt was made to number the
  73.       provinces in geographical groups; onshore, offshore, and combined on and offshore.
  74.
  75.       In South Asia, the numbering starts in the west.
